A
Superior Choice |
 |
When you choose Merbau
Decking, you’re choosing strength and beauty. Yellowish
brown with a lovely, tight grain, this Indonesian
hardwood bears a resemblance to Brazilian Ipe, with much
less color variation than other hardwoods. It is a
thoroughly hard, clear-grade, kiln-dried wood, resistant
to shrinking, splintering, and checking: in short, it’s
a superior choice for any decking project.
Merbau is harvested from well-managed permanent forests,
continuously replanted in a program of sustainable
agriculture. This program is overseen, coordinated, and
supervised by the Forestry Department of Indonesian
Government. That spells good sense, considering that
plantation-grown hardwood is one of Indonesia’s major
long-term industries. |
 |
|
Natural Durability |
 |
Merbau is naturally
resistant to rot, decay, termites, and fire. Much harder
than California redwood or cedar, the wood is kiln-dried
to bring even greater stability to your deck for the
long term. Uniquely attractive, highly durable, this is
one hardwood you'll enjoy year after year. |
 |
|
Easy
Maintenance |
 |
Merbau should be equipped
with a wood-stabilizing agent before it’s exposed to
sunlight. Simply store any untreated pieces under a
tarp, and apply the sunscreen during or after
installation. We suggest using two coats of a high
quality finish. For best results, reapply it annually,
or as needed – and that’s all there is to it!

Installation Instructions |
 |
Handling and Cutting
● Surfaced on 4
sides (S4S) and eased on 4 edges (E4E), Merbau is
ready for easy installation.
● Keep the product out of
direct sunlight before installation and finishing.
● Ensure that there
is proper ground-side ventilation before constructing your
deck.
● Although
Merbau can be cut and machined with standard woodworking
tools, for best results or large jobs, we recommend using a
carbide-tipped blade.
End Sealing
● After
crosscutting exposed ends should be sealed with clear
paraffin wax based end sealant.
Fastening
● Stainless steel screws are recommended but not required.
Screw length should be a minimum of 1 ½” longer than
thickness of the board.
● Pre-drill fastener pilot holes close to the actual screw
diameter (decking board only).
● A minimum of ¼” spacing required between decking boards.
● Decking boards
should be attached with 2 screws at each joist (face screws
only).
|
 |
Finishing and Maintenance
● Apply a high
quality finish during installation, or immediately
afterwards. We recommend Wolman
Exotic Hardwood Treatment.
● If you plan to
install your deck in stages, seal each section as you
complete it.
● To maintain
Merbau’s natural beauty year after year, clean and reseal it
annually.

About Merbau Decking
(Intsia ssp) |
 |

 |
|
Merbau is widely distributed
across the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean and
northern Australia. It is also found throughout tropical
Asia, as well as East Africa, where it was introduced.
The trees grow on a variety of soil types, in coastal
forests or lowland tropical rainforests, up to altitudes
of 1000m. Like many secondary species, the seedlings
need openings in the forest canopy to allow their rapid
initial growth, but once established, they require
partial shade. The most widespread species is I.
Bijuga. The most widely used species are I.
Bijuga and I. Palembanica. |
